“First I’ve got to meet her, then I can defeat her.” ~Not a quote but it could be.
Grab a pen and paper, or your computer, and give yourself 15 minutes to do a little Self-Exploration.
Here are the instructions…
- Identify an aspect of your personality that is you’d like to disempower. Is it jealousy? Or competitiveness? Or are you judgmental? Whatever aspect it is, name it. Sarah. Stan. Bob. Esmerelda. Just name it.
- What does he/she wear?
- What is his/her history?
- His/Her agenda?
- Fears? Wants? Needs?
- Does this person live in a house, an apartment, a beach shack?
- Free write for a few minutes to bring this character to life.
- Then, if you want a little more, write a conversation between the conscious you (the one that is creating the character) and the actual character. Meaning, write a conversation between you and your jealous/competitive/judgmental/other side. What do they have to say to each other? Questions? Answers? Is the conversation rooted in real stuff or entirely make-believe?
Maybe the dialogue will take you somewhere enlightening. Maybe you’ll learn something. Maybe it’ll just be fun. Whatever the outcome, it’s self-exploration and that’s good.
P.S. I’d love to hear about your characters if you feel like sharing. Feel free to introduce them below…
